First we have the  Greenhouse by Mickey Muennig, located at Partington Ridge in Big Sur, California in 1976. Being only one room, this may be the most simple form of living, but it would be relaxing at that. It incorporates the natural surroundings by using naturally formed stone and wood beam supports and features a large glass wall on the west face of the home, inviting the beautiful coastline into the home 24/7. The redwood platform bed is suspended from the ceiling by steel rods and the round floorplan allows enough room for simple, daily tasks. The circular oculus at the top opens up, acting as a thermostat for the home. Living in this home, you may actually need to take a vacation away from paradise!

Next, we have a home in the trees. This Treehouse is part of a resort in Costa Rica and literally brings the exterior surroundings indoors. It was built using only sustainable woods. All wood used for this suite came from fallen trees and was cut on location to the desired sizes, and was then transported by oxen to be built. Aside from being a sustainable space, it is also quite universal in that a bridge leads visitors from the ground to the first level, allowing any person of any ability to enjoy such beauty. As it sleeps six and consists of two stories, one double bed and one single bed reside on the first floor, allowing for those who find it difficult to climb stairs to sleep comfortably in this getaway. And remember, no trees were harmed in the making of this treehouse!

Third is the Ladera Resort in St. Lucia. As the resort website explains,  “A thousand feet below, an intensely blue Caribbean Sea dashes against the volcanic Piton Mountains. Faintly scented tropical breezes cool your skin. Your private plunge pool beckons. Each offers fine linens, luxurious amenities and four-poster beds made of polished tropical hardwood. And each, deliberately without a fourth wall, invites the spectacular sunsets and astonishing views right inside, to be a part of your very private, very special retreat”. Now who wouldn’t want to stay in a hotel like that?!

Up next is the Underwater Bedroom in the Maldives. Yes, here is a place you can sleep underwater without worries of getting water in your lungs. The symmetrical balance used to design this suite looks great with the light wood detailing and white accents. The blue rug mimics the ocean above, but in all, the subtle elements and principles used for this space do nothing but keep you focused on the surrounding sea. Up fifth is the Pretty Beach House on Bouddi Peninsula in Australia. This villa for two is hidden high on a slope under beautiful angophoras and native eucalyptus trees. You become one with the surroundings as they are welcomed into the space through large windows. And the villa itself becomes one with the surroundings because of the use of reclaimed woods and neutral tones on the exterior. A small lagoon-like pool accompanies this suite to make it feel more like you’re part of the natural wilderness of Australia. The windows are positioned to face the best views, but if you want better views while you fall asleep at night or wake up in the morning, a large bed under a cabana is provided on the deck next to the pool. Too bad you couldn’t live here all the time, because I know it would be extremely difficult to leave such a beautiful place!

Next is the Heinz Julen Penthouse in Zemratt, Switzerland. Pictured is a small gathering room, mostly adorned with light wood floors, furniture, and beams, topped with a glass roof and large glass windows. The interior design brought in subtle colors found in the exterior views; green plants were brought in to enhance the trees scattered amongst the buildings, red throw pillows bring out some of the red brick buildings seen in the views, and dark neutral tones were used for the couch and other accessories to match the mountain ranges. In this penthouse, you’re above everything and when it comes to views, the sky is not the limit when you can become mesmerized by it all day and all night long.

Second to last, we have the Igloo Village in Kakslauttanen, Finland. Much research has been done to make such an architectural challenge possible. Special glass keeps the inside warm for its guests, even when the outdoor temperature is 30 degrees below zero. Also, special technology is infused within the glass to prevent it from frosting and fogging, allowing full sight of all surrounding views. And finally, all glass is braced by black beams and supports, adding just a touch of modern design. The interior is adorned by warm colors and soft textiles to keep its guests feeling mentally warmer when the igloo is surrounded by snow. This village was constructed in a geographical location that has some of the best views of the northern lights. Who wouldn’t want to fall asleep to your own natural light show?

Last but not least, we feature a different type of paradise. Some people just really love antique architecture and Gothic cathedral design styles. Here is the Converted Cathedral, which that it is! This interior cathedral was updated by several thousand years to be of a quirky, contemporary style. Most importantly, the original features of the cathedral were emphasized as the focal points of this design. The large rose window is the main focal point, with its ornate trim and wired glass, allowing plenty of natural light into the space. The rose window is flanked by original lancet arches, specific to the Gothic era. These original features were painted brown to stand out on stark white walls. Other brown features of the room, such as the couch and cow hyde rugs, really help the arches stand out in their vast scale, all while bringing them down to ground level. Any art history buff would be so lucky to stay in this magnificent space.

Among these ten beautiful spaces, there are thousands more. And beyond that, there are millions of ways to incorporate your own favorite paradise into your home.
